Cultural
Treasures of Romania, Moldova & Bulgaria
Countries
visited: Romania, Moldova (with Tiraspol) & Bulgaria |
 |
In
this tour we visit three gems of Eastern Europe. Romania's
rich cultural heritage is exemplified in its 25 World Heritage
Sites. From stone churches, fortresses and painted churches,
to its villages and markets, Romania offers up a plethora
of inviting experiences for the intrepid traveler. Moldavia
is a tiny, picturesque country with rolling green hills,
whitewashed villages, placid lakes, sunflower fields and
an engaging old-world charm. Our last exploration is the
country of Bulgaria where we examine outstanding Thracian,
Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine historical landmarks,
some of which are also recognized UNESCO World Heritage
Sites. |

World Heritage Sites Visited
This tour has been tailored to include the following World
Heritage Sites |
| Romania |
|
|
Historic Centre of Sighisoara (1999) |
Founded by German craftsmen and merchants known
as the Saxons of Transylvania, Sighisoara is a fine example
of a small, fortified medieval town which played an important
strategic and commercial role on the fringes of central Europe
for several centuries. |
| Churches
of Moldavia
(1993) |
With their painted exterior walls, decorated
with 15th- and 16th-century frescoes that are considered masterpieces
of Byzantine art, these seven churches in northern Moldavia
are unique in Europe. Far from being merely wall decorations,
the paintings represent complete cycles of religious murals
on all facades. Their outstanding composition, elegant outline
and harmonious colours blend perfectly with the surrounding
landscape. |
| Bulgaria |
|
| Madara
Rider
(1979) |
The Madara Rider, representing the figure of
a knight triumphing over a lion, is carved into a 100-m-high
cliff near the village of Madara in north-east Bulgaria. Madara
was the principal sacred place of the First Bulgarian Empire
before Bulgaria's conversion to Christianity in the 9th century.
The inscriptions beside the sculpture tell of events that occurred
between A.D. 705 and 801. |
| Rila
Monastery (1983) |
Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century
by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church.
His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed
into a monastic complex, which subsequently played an important
role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria.
Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the
complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. The monument is
a characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th-19th
centuries) and symbolizes an awareness of a Slavic cultural
identity following centuries of occupation. |
