This tour has been tailored to include the following World Heritage Sites

World Heritage Sites in Peru covered on this tour
City of Cuzco (1983) Located in the Peruvian Andes, Cuzco developed, under the Inca ruler Pachacutec, into a complex urban centre with distinct religious and administrative functions. It was surrounded by clearly delineated areas for agricultural, artisan and industrial production. When the Spaniards conquered it in the 16th century, they maintained its structure but built Baroque churches and palaces over the ruins of the Indian city.
Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (1983) At 2,430 metres / 2657 yards above sea level, on a mountain site of extraordinary beauty, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, Machu Picchu was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height, with its giant walls, terraces and ramps, which appear as though they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting on the eastern slope of the Andes encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of species.
Historic Centre of Lima (1988) Although severely damaged by earthquakes (in 1940, 1966, 1970 and 1974), this "City of Kings" was, until the middle of the 18th century, the capital and most important city of the Spanish dominions in South America. Many of its buildings, such as the San Francisco Convent (the biggest in this part of the world) are the result of joint creations between local craftsmen and masters from the Old Continent.
World Heritage Sites in Bolivia covered on this tour
Tiwanaku (2000) The city of Tiwanaku, capital of a powerful pre-Hispanic empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond, reached its apogee between 500 and 900 A.D. Its monumental remains testify to the cultural and political significance of this civilisation, which is distinct from any of the other pre-Hispanic empires of the Americas.

Day 3: Market day in Pisac, Sacred Valley
Probably the most spectacular market in all of the Andes! But Pisac is also a superb Inca fortress, with temple ruins that still overwhelm with their most magnificent Inca masonry. In the afternoon follow the Sacred Valley along Rio Urubamba down to Ollentaytambo. How to survive under these climatic conditions, feed an enormously numerous population? See the a complete irrigation system in the mountains, canals cut out of the sheer rock. The flights of terraces leading up above the town are superb and so are the curving terraces following the contours of the rocks overlooking the Urubamba. (B)

Early in the morning transfer to the station for the train travel to Machu Picchu. A 3 hour scenic train journey brings you to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you will take a shuttle bus up to the entrance of the ruins. Day 6: Train to Puno!
Another interesting but relaxing day is waiting for you. As you sink in to your seat, watch mountains go by as high as 20 000 feet, snow capped & majestic. As the train stops en route, glimpse out of the window and wonder how the local Indians live here. See potato fields that feed these people and which from here through the Spanish conquerors also became a mainstay for the entire world. This evening, check in to the hotel.

This afternoon have a look at the astonishing pre-Columbian funeral towers of Sillustani in a beautiful setting on a peninsula in lake Umayo. Archaeologist’s attempts to rebuild the towers have been defeated. The engineering involved is more complex then anything the Incas built. (B)
