Why is April 18 so significant?
Today we celebrate humankind’s collective history.
It was in 1982 that the International Council on Monuments and Sites declared April 18 as World Heritage Day. The following year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) provided further support with a resolution passed at its General Assembly.
Since then, countries across our globe have recognized this day as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of heritage and the measures required to preserve it.
Heritage can incorporate both the tangible and the intangible. It can take many forms, including landmarks, places, buildings, spaces, views and the stories associated with them. To learn about our heritage is to learn about our origins and, in the process, understand our collective history - both the good and the bad.
In our 40 years of developing tour itineraries, Bestway Tours & Safaris has laid special emphasis on heritage and cultural experiences. Our tour destinations include some 80 plus countries in the regions of Africa, the Americas, Central Asia, Europe, Indochina, the Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia. Each journey offers unique opportunities to learn about the heritage and cultures of the people we visit.
Our focus on heritage has led us to develop our own specialized division, World Heritage Tours, which traces the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the world.
One heritage destination coming to the forefront is Egypt, home to some of our civilization’s most well-known monuments and accomplishments.
Egypt was one of the top destinations before the “Arab Spring” of December 2010. During the upheaval, the tourism industry of Egypt and the other neighbouring countries suffered greatly. However, today, Egypt takes the lead once again with a wave of travel interest. Tourism is coming back into the lives and economy of the country and its people.
Heritage sites across Egypt commemorate the longest living civilization of the ancient world, including the famous Valley of the Kings, the imposing temples at Luxor, Karnak and Abu Simbel, and the new billion-dollar Grand Egyptian Museum, set to open in May 2018 and described as the largest archaeological museum in the world.
As cruise ships and group tours start to move to this incredible country, now is the time to experience Egypt’s heritage and beat the influx of tourists on the horizon. I had the good fortune to re-explore Egypt last month and I must say, I was very impressed with rebirth of tourism there. The trip was to assess not only the sites but also feel comfortable with the security and other arrangements.
Celebrate World Heritage Day with a plan to visit some of Earth’s most ancient man-made wonders. Peruse our Egypt adventures below, or find the list of our Egypt tours here. Stay tuned on this section of our website, as we will be introducing more exciting Egypt journeys in the next few months.
